Announcements post #97: Starmourn is one year old!

From: Ilyos, the Arbiter
Subject: Starmourn is one year old!
Starmourn opened its gates to players one year ago today! On December 15th 2018, a small team brought to fruition several years of development, and we all stepped into the fantastic, futuristic world of Starmourn! And what a ride it's been so far.
We've seen dynasties rise and fall, monopolies, conglomerates, and corporations burgeon and decline. Mysterious cosmpiercers were captured, their powers harnessed. Hundreds of spaceships were blown to smithereens. Millions of marks have changed accounts. The galaxy unfolded before our eyes. Adventurers stepped into uncharted wildernesses, only to come back battered and wealthy with minerals and mysterious crystals. Scientists studied and catalogued the fauna of the sector. Musical aspirants rose to great heights of popularity, and spacers with an eye for business mastered the intricacies of refining and manufacturing.
Despite deep racial and cultural differences, adventurers from all corners of the Sector banded together and brought peace to their planets, besieged as they were by cultists, misguided Bushraki, and fleets of hostile pirates. Fights broke out, people exploded, were torn asunder, driven to madness, crushed, and incinerated. Bounties were placed and collected. The whole cybersphere quivered under the unrelenting assaults of Starmourn's very skilled hackers. Despite all adversity, the great factions of Starmourn have thrived and prospered. Many, many new pages of history have been recorded in the archives of the galaxy.
And we have all of you to thank for this! You have all helped write Starmourn's history this past year and we hope you will continue to do so, alongside us, for many years to come!
Starmourn turns one year old today and we have a little gift for you all! Log in to the game today and receive a free giftcatcher from us and a Starmourn commemorative badge. Be sure to TOUCH your badge for a personal gesture from some very special figures!

Announcements post #96: Faction Surveillance Systems.

From: Ilyos, the Arbiter
Subject: Faction Surveillance Systems.
Greetings Starmourners,
Helping their effort to mitigate criminal activity and vandalism, factions now have access to %7SURVEILLANCE%. All factions can install surveillance systems in various rooms of their capitals. These systems will automatically report (and log) criminal activity in that room. Criminal activity is currently represented by : hacking attempts in that room, graffiti spraying in that room and fighting in that room.
How it works:
- You may use %7SURVEILLANCE% or %7FACTION SURVEILLANCE% to see the base usage of this feature
- Only those that have the GUARDS privilege in a faction may perform most surveillance and datacenter related activities
- %7SURVEILLANCE INSTALL% will automatically install a system in your current room. This costs a hefty 250,000 marks (drawn out of faction accounts). The steep price is there because we really don't want all rooms in a faction to be monitored. Choose your points of interests wisely.
- %7SURVEILLANCE SCRAP% will dismantle a system in the current room and refund two thirds of the cost
- All factions now have a SURVEILLANCE DATACENTER in their factions. You may find this Datacenter using the %7LANDMARKS% command (it's near the CAC, roughly)
- From the Datacenter, you may perform a set of additional actions: you may power cameras on and off, you may toggle cameras to track citizen actions ( a camera that does not track citizen actions will not report a hacking/graffiti/combat attempt by a citizen) and you may look at the screen to see what is going on in that room.
In response to surveillance, there is a new HACKING ability related to SURVEILLANCE. Hackers may now %7HACK SURVEILLANCE% if they're standing in a datacenter and attempt to take control of the system in order to turn cameras off. And no, you cannot install a surveillance system in a datacenter, that would be not fun. Hackers may never install/scrap surveillance systems. Also, the FRAY anonymity reward also prevents you from flagged by surveillance.
Smile for the cameras now!

Re: New player messages
You are very right, @Cubey! Thanks for pointing that out, the log note will be moved to when a person finishes the tutorial.

Re: New player messages
Currently, the logs (and announcement) only pop up after the player finishes the tutorial and is dumped at their factional station and told to reach level 5.
But yeah, I'm all for including a few more tips about FT/FWHO/FHELP

Re: Shuttle transit has too many similar-looking layers.
Speaking directly to the new shuttle layout, I disagree with it. There is a number of reasons that you HAVE to pass through Omni (or Aleph voidgate) in order to get anywhere. From a game design perspective, this increases the chances of players having an encounter, which means an increased chance of fun and violence. From a lore perspective, Araxi became super rich, built a space station, and then forced the entire sector to go through her, making her powerful. I think you'll find you will only take that away from her over her cold, dead body.

Re: Let's have that TL;DR bois
Overall, Starmourn seems much improved since I played last December/January.
Way WAY less players, which at first I was bummed about. However, the community is so much tighter now I don't mind it at all. When there are 300 players online, you only get to know a few really well. When there are only 12 active players in your faction, well you get to know them all (or at least over time). Also no more junkies rushing to your body to steal your replicator and items within a few seconds of your death.
Haven't explored PK yet, but from what I hear, it is also much improved. More opportunity for group PvP, just not the player-base to sustain it yet.
RP is back! When Starmourn was originally rushed with players, everybody was so focused on the gains that people just interacted with their old friends. Now that there isn't this overwhelming competition to level, people are actually standing around who you can interact with. @Vega's first interaction with Zhedan is basically what made me decide to stay beyond the first 5 levels. Now I'm hooked!
Hunting is about the same. Pretty fast once you get moving. Welcome back!

Re: Shuttle transit has too many similar-looking layers.
Sorry, searching in space is not what I meant! I assumed falsely that you were aware of the voidgate iris system.gravithicc said:eel said:Can't you just gatewarp and use the voidgate irises? They make searching for Ironbeard pretty trivial.I appreciate the tip. I don't use voidgates, so I didn't consider searching via space.
So, for my explanation, it might be best if you followed along in game.
From Omni, Station Transfer List to any faction main station, in this example I will use Reynolds.
From Reynolds, Station Transfer List to (6) The Scatterhome Voidgate.
This takes you to a room with no exits, named 'At the Scatterhome voidgate iris' but gives three non-walking travel options:
1. TAKEOFF LIST: allows you to head back to Reynolds. For some reason, the SH voidgate iris has options besides a shuttle back to the originating faction station. The other factions, I believe, have only a shuttle back to the faction station. Though, (3) to Solace doesn't actually work. (I've bugged it.)
2. KEY PTP: this is the real treasure, it allows you to travel between the racial homeworlds within the faction with no waiting time. In this case, it is (1) Krell, (2) Gunurash III, and (3) the Blood Ark. Haven is a little more inconvenient specifically in the context of searching for Ironbeard, when you are not SH, but is the only one with this limitation, of all the Ironbeard orbit possibilities.
3. GATEWARP: this allows you to warp via voidgate on foot, using the same voidgate links as space voidgates use. Like KEY PTP above, there is no waiting time, but do keep in mind each time you use voidgates on foot, you are charged 50 marks.
Using 2 and 3 together allows a very quick search through all racial homeworlds except Haven (if you are SH, you can PTP directly to Haven from the Blood Ark, but otherwise you must go through Reynolds). Please let me know if I was unclear in above explanation, or if anything doesn't make sense, it should once you attempt a few passes through.
Anyway, that should ease your troubles with actually searching for Ironbeard.
This does get explained at some point in the main story quest, but probably only once in yellow text somewhere. I suppose the fact that we even need a detailed explanation on how the various shuttles/teleports/transports work is not a point in the current system's favor.
