9.1 Space Travel

Traveling through space is easy! If you have a ship, simply board it (make sure you have insurance!) and
head out into space. HELP SHIP COMMANDS will run you through the basics of space flight.

Space Stations
--------------
Stations are the gateways to planets and other terrestrial areas of the Sector. Typically they are in orbit
around the main celestial body of a given system. Ships dock at space stations, and travellers then take a
transport to the surface of the planet (or moon, or asteroid, etc.). See HELP STATIONS for more of what you
can do at a space station.

Space Travel Without a Ship
---------------------------
If you are without a ship for whatever reason, you can still travel through space to most locations.

Some transport shuttle networks will not only take you to the surface of a planet, they also travel between
stations in the same subsec or those that are located very near. Namely, the Scatterhome, Song, and Celestine
territories. It is possible to quickly hop between all of these subsecs, as well as several other nearby
destinations, such as Omni Station, Usum Usutti and the Diamond Belt.

Voidgates
---------
To reach more distant areas of the Sector, spacers can make use of voidgates (for a Mark fee). On a ship,
one can fly directly into the gate and then jump to the paired location. If travelling without a ship, simply
take a transport to the voidgate's station and access the voidgate at the station. See HELP VOIDGATES for more.

9.4 Stations

Stations are the main access points for the various planets and other inhabited areas in the Starmourn Sector.

At most stations you can:

   - Dock a ship
   - Take a transfer to the surface of a planet, moon, asteroid, etc.
   - Repair personal equipment
   - Send packages via Crazy Jerry's Darkstar Parcel Service
   - Purchase ship insurance
   - Sell your junk
   - Designate your cloning facility
   - Manufacturing
   - Access a public trade network

At some stations you can:

   - Commission a new ship
   - Purchase components and modules

9.5.1 Ship Superstructure

There are currently nine classes of ship superstructure, available from various manufacturers across the Sector.
The following table lists superstructures from small to large, with the range of possible mod slots (combinations
vary between models).

Class Small Mods Med Mods Large Mods
   ---------------- ---------- -------- -----------
   Interceptor 2 1-2 0
   Corvette 1-3 1-2 0-1
   Lightfreighter 1-2 1 0
   Destroyer 2 1-2 1
   Heavyfreighter 2-3 2-3 0
   Cruiser 2-3 2-3 2
   Superhauler 4 3 0
   Battleship 4-5 3-4 2
   Supercruiser 5 4-5 3

Larger ship have more health, support bigger shields/engines/weapons/modules, have more refit rooms available,
but are more expensive when using voidgates.

Smaller ships attacking bigger ships (size-wise) have a higher chance for their attacks to bypass shields, and a
small ship can more quickly achieve target lock on a larger ship.

9.5.5 Insurance

Purchasing insurance is essential for any space captain - unless, of course, you consider your ship disposable.
Purchasing insurance will ensure that, in the event of an untimely explosion, your ship is quickly rebuilt for a
fraction of the cost of a new vessel. It does not provide for the recovery of any uninstalled equipment or other
cargo in your hold.

To insure your ship, head to a Stellar Insurance Corp counter - these are found on nearly all space stations in
the Sector.

In the event that you install additional or more costly equipment on your ship AFTER you have already insured it,
the cost difference will need to be paid before retrieving your rebuilt ship.

INSURANCE STATUS (ship) Check the insurance status of a ship.
INSURANCE PURCHASE (ship) Buy insurance for a ship.
INSURANCE RELEASE (ship) Pay off any owed insurance funds for a ship.

9.12 Jettison

Can you throw someone out the airlock, a.k.a. spacing, a.k.a. jettisoning?

No, safety technology currently prevents this from happening, whether accidentally or intentionally.

Comments

  • Not a fan of 'spacers' sounds either very dated, or very cheesy. But I look forward to be using these Help files one day.

Also I was wondering how personal mail deliveries would work here.

  • How much time do you think it would take an average player to buy and insure their first ship?

Oh, insurance. I don't need that. I'm never going to destroy my ship.  ;)
As T'rath has pierced the veil, so will I, and so will my life become complete in a good death.
