((So this is something I used to do with a different RP crowd a few years back (Like six or so years now i think). Posting short character-centric stories, sometimes multi part/post as a way of either showcasing certain things about a character that aren't normally seen or aren't as easy to do on the fly, or as a kind of post-event reaction to something that happened in game, but also just cause it's fun to do. This is just part one.))

An Earth-styled interceptor with patchy brown and black paint slowly traverses subsector RA-4444, making small course adjustments periodically. Inside, the main view screens are dark and the area is illuminated only by the red glow of an LED strip and the navchart ticking down the distance to the predetermined destination. Soft snoring emits from the drifting form of Zarrach in the microgravity of the cockpit, slack-jawed in his slumber. A quiet chime precedes the ship’s sudden stop as it reaches its destination, and Zarrach is rudely jerked awake by the gravity in his ship suddenly restoring itself, causing him to fall back into his seat.

“<<Chert, uzhe zdes'?>> That was fast.” he muttered as he raised himself into a seated position. As Zarrach hurriedly repositioned himself a humanoid figure rose from a holo emitter on his console, her form one of hard white light. Her face was inscrutable, an intentional thing on her part as she regarded the itinerant space drifter before her.

“I told you this wouldn’t take long, the ship wasn’t that far away to get away with sleeping.” Is0beL said, her tone chastising. Zarrach shrugged, punching in a few commands to turn on the primary view screens so he could see what he had flown all this way for. A derelict ship, not the Event Horizon wreck but a different one, though this wreck too had had an encounter with some of the lingering anomalies that still lurk in the depths of the sector from that event. Most of the crew was missing, assumed destroyed or displaced by the anomalies. Enough made it to the lifepods and into safer sub-sectors to tell the tale.
Is0beL took over the fine flight controls, bringing the ship in closer in preparation for Zarrach’s spacewalk. She ‘looked’ at the viewscreen as the Vagabond Vaporwave drifted closer to a breached part of the hull.
“I am still picking up traces of anomalous pockets. Be careful, I don’t like getting towed back to Omni.”

Zarrach cracked the canopy of his interceptor, and his nanite base layer immediately went into emergency EVA status, generating a small forcefield around him to trap oxygen around his body. Is0beL closed the canopy as he walked down the nose of his ship, his footfalls thudding as the magnets in his boots kept him from drifting off before he was ready. A simple hop was all the momentum he needed to cross through the blown out hull.

He’d been tasked with a pretty simple job, get the flight data back, download the sensor data and get it all back, a physical presence was needed due to the remote uplink getting destroyed. He was going to be paid once he uploaded the information, but it was not specified what was to happen to the wreck. Should a few loose items go missing, who would be there to tell him off for it? Nothing personal, just business. The wreck’s interior was a mess of scorched hallways from overloaded systems, strange piles of sludge that he suspected might have been crew, and all systems were fried.

Zarrach reached into the space in front of him, manipulating a menu in his local commsphere. Is0beL appeared next to him, looking through security feeds.
“I thought you were staying on the Drifter.” he said, not taking his eyes off the menu.
“I can be in both places, it’s not that hard.” she replied, rewinding and scanning footage prior to the ship’s destruction and subsequent abandonment. “Besides, it’s not like anything is going to happen to the Drifter.”
“You don’t know that.”, Zarrach shot back with a growl, “Remember the last wreck we did? With the <<sboy>> maintenance drones that tried to scrap it to repair their own wreck?”
“Yes, obviously. We got through that just fine.” she said with a digital sniff.
“<<Vy zapustili korabl' v solnechnuyu vspyshku!>>”
“It worked though!”

Zarrach sighed heavily, and the door in front of him finally slid open as his slicer tool finally breached the lockdown commands on it. He felt the ice-water chill of something being very off before the air in front of him tore open and a ball-shaped anomaly came through it and then subsequently vanished as reality reasserted itself.
“<<Eto snova my>>”, Zarrach said as he shook his head and stepped into the anomaly infested wreck.
“I’ll stay here and sift through data, find anything useful and I’ll drop a beacon on it for you in your iRIS.” said Is0beL, before flickering out of view.

Zarrach passed through several compartments, heading to the command deck. It was on the crew deck, in the hallway that he realised something was up. The stairs he was on seemed to be going on forever.

“Oh you have got to be fucking kidding.” he grumbled as the realization sunk in.
Is0beL> What are you grumbling about now?
Zarrach> I’ve been going in a loop for the last maybe twenty minutes. Just realised it.
Is0beL> Took you that long to notice?
Zarrach> I thought that I’d found a straight shot to the command deck. Just get me another route, this is already looking like it’s going to be a long job.
Is0beL> Plotting. Go back to the Crew deck and go down to Engineering, then up through Crew again on the otherside.
Zarrach> Why the otherside?
Is0beL> Too much anomalous activity to go directly through Crew to the other Command access.
“Oh.” Zarrach grunted, and he turned back down the stairs following the navigation line in his display.

He felt the air tear apart behind him once more, and another ball-shaped anomaly dropped into view. Immediately it started sending out arcs of energy, scorching the walls and floor as reality tried to reassert itself again and disperse the problem. A high-pitched whine emanated from the ball, which Zarrach immediately recognized for what it was. He dove over the railing, dropping to the stairwell below.
Right into another anomaly that just coalesced into the space below him.
“Ah, fuck.” he blurted out just as he passed into it.

A distorted kaleidoscope of colors and sounds assaulted Zarrach’s senses, and he heard the telltale silent static of his connection to the general commsphere of his time going dead. This wasn’t the first time he’d been cast adrift in the timeline by one of the anomalies, so the shock was not as severe. At least it wasn’t until he saw where and when he was.

It was an empty street in a city on an arid planet, one he’d forgotten the name of, but remembered vividly. He looked up the street, and saw his old apartment. His younger self was leaning out the window, a cigarette between his fingers and a tired, bone-weary look on his face.
“Holy shit… I look like hell.” he muttered, quickly racking his mind for when this was, and more importantly, why he was in his own timeline.
A pale, blonde-haired woman joined the younger-Zarrach at the window, wrapping - more like draping - herself across his shoulders intimately.
Older-Zarrach groaned in realization, his shoulders slumping.
Not this.

As he watched, his younger self turned his head to look at the woman behind him. Saying something inaudibly, the woman recoiled slightly at the words. Seeing the interaction, older-Zarrach’s memory filled in the blanks with startling clarity.

“I think we should see other people.”
“What, bored of me already? I’m not bored of you.” the woman purred in younger-Zarrach’s ear, nibbling on the lobe playfully.
“I don’t do well staying in one spot, you know that.”
“It’s what I like about you, that restless energy. Makes things… interesting.”
Younger-Zarrach simply stares at the woman.
The woman laughs, the sound is mirthful and older-Zarrach feels his teeth grind as the rest of the memory plays out in his head and before his eyes.
“Darling, I’ve only shared my bed with you, you know that. Why in the world would I give you up?”
“This isn’t that kind of breakup. She’s back, I have to go find her.”

She…? Oh. Oh no, no don’t show me this. Don’t show me her. I don’t know if I’m ready.

“What, so I was just some temporary hole for you to fuck?”
“I seem to recall you were the one who dragged my drunk ass back to your room.”
“You never complained.” said the woman.
Younger-Zarrach aggressively shrugged the woman off him, disappearing into the room.
“So what? That’s it? She crops up in the subsector, and you go running?”

Older-Zarrach shook his head, remembering the cocktail of feelings he had in this moment.
Anger, at the woman for seducing him, at himself for being seduced.
Joy, for finally getting a message from “her”.
Fear, over not knowing how things were with “her”, they’d parted on such a bad note.
Happiness, he finally had an out with this relationship.
Impatience, with this woman who was holding him back at this moment.

Reality shuddered around him, the scene flickering before his eyes before finally completely dissolving back into the present. Zarrach dropped to the floor, retching as his entire body tried to process the chronological whiplash it just received.

Is0beL> WHAT IN THE FUCK WAS THAT.
Zarrach> I fell into a time tear trying to get away from an angry anomaly.
Is0beL> Try to avoid that in the future, please. It is extremely weird to be displaced when you do that.
Zarrach> Yeah, well, you weren’t a part of me at the time, so naturally you’re disabled when I go to those times.”
Zarrach stood, knees shaking and wiping his mouth.
Is0beL> Are you expecting more displacements into your own past?”

“<<Aga>>, I got a feeling this anomaly incursion is intelligent, or at least capable of learning.”
Is0beL> What makes you say that?
“I wasn’t the only one watching.”

((Next episode coming when my life settles a bit more. Edit: Formatting, bane of my existence.))

Hello!!

Just a reminder that Scatterfest is today at sync!

Get your butts down to Gravity for some of the hottest acts in the sector, a rainbow tesseract opening, a ridiculously good prize draw, goodie bags and many fun RP times.

I'd the bands proponent will be an hour, (and it can't go over or I'm responsible for losing people popularity and money heh) and then the prize-giving and tesseract party maybe another 30 minutes and there's usually some RP afterwards with all the excitment. So I'd allow 2 hours from start to finish.

If anyone causes trouble I WILL KILL YOU. I've worked my butt off for this event, and so have all the performers, so be nice plz. Thx. Stinkbombers will be stink-eyed and eviscerated at a later date without warning (but srsly please don't, or wait til after the things, I'm stressing).

Lineup is:

Orrin Omnifarious / K0NF3KTI0N - Orrin Moonchild and Keiko T'rath, who will also be presenting!

One Elgan and his Humor Optimizer - Jile's stand-up comedy gig!

Red//Strike - Sazabi Redstrike and his B.E.A.S.T. suit, Big Red.

AlgoRhythm - Hope Moonchild's multifaceted musical delight.

Voidwitch - The enigmatic Scatterwitch herself: Poet

Bionic Heart! - A brand new NPC band headlining - who are taking the sector by storm after a quick rise to immense fame. (Thank you Saio!)

Running order:

Sync -30mins > Sync - Hand out goodie bags to people who arrive.
Sync - Bands (in the order listed above - PLEASE get there a little early if you can, as we got a lot to pack in to the hour so I need to get started on time)
Sync +1 - Prize draws (you need to have been there from before the end of the first band to qualify for the draws).
After that, probably Sync +1.5ish - Tesseract opening!!!

If you're unfamiliar with rainbow tesseract opening - for each rainbow tesseract that's opened every person in the room gets a promo prize, which could be artifacts, special items, credits, marks, lessons etc. So even if you don't come to the show I'd recommend just being present for the tesseract opening time (but come to the gig too because it will be great)!

Please read the news posts below for details on prizes and stuff.

https://www.starmourn.com/news/?game=Starmourn&section=public&number=379

https://www.starmourn.com/news/?game=Starmourn&section=public&number=381

https://www.starmourn.com/news/?game=Starmourn&section=public&number=382

I hope to see you all there!

Orrin

Hi folks,

I'm fairly new to the game but not new to roleplaying or IRE games. I've been around since 2002 and I've played across a vast array of roleplaying games and I like to think I'm a bit good at it.

What I'm looking for is people who want to contribute to a company that my character Vohl is creating.

The idea is that (I know, probably cheese) Vohl has for (undisclosed reasons) been forced to move to Scatterhome. He'll never reveal the exact details but he'll often tell stories of vague mishaps, the details usually different from person to person depending on his angle but the truth remains that SOMETHING has unseated him from his home planet and forced him to start over in Scatterhome.

He's now trying to hire an all-Elgan crew and form a legitimate company. This would really suit people who enjoy rp'ing as traders, con-artists, sleazers, but above all who're enamoured with the Elgan rp and who're willing to help me really make it shine according to what lore we have. Note: to work for Vohl you need to be Elgan.

The end-goal isn't necessarily to 'win' at Starmourn so if people are not very wise on trading or perhaps more interested in 'bashing' I won't mind. What I'm looking for primarily is good solid roleplay with people who can think outside of the game mechanics and create rp in the spaces between where the props might only exist in emotes and the mechanisms of the rp might also only exist in the shared consensual imagination of those involved. Think for example - something that can't physically be bought or sold or a service like 'matchmaker dating agency' where it's entirely based on RP. That's the kind of innovative thinkers I'm keen to meet and to add to my Elgan stable.

I'm ALSO looking for people who're interested in interacting with above - and I'm open to staging ideas but also improv - less interested in PVP or 'surprise' conflict - so if you want to create some fun drama, please by all means pitch an idea to me, but if you're looking for something that doesn't involve conflict, I'm happy to improv with you as well as stage ideas OOCly for fun storylines.

DISCLAIMER: I do know that conflict will find me regardless of the above gentleman's agreement and I don't plan on crying foul but please be aware that the above is intended to attract what I'm looking for and isn't an exhaustive list or rules of engagement.

A rant, about ruining Roleplay with OOC goals

To make perfectly clear, I am going to rant. I need to vent, and I wanted to hear some feedback from the community at the same time. The following is based entirely on MY opinion, as well as the information presented to my character. At ZERO point is this an attack on any particular person. I shall do my best to avoid naming names, although I assume it will be clear what I'm discussing. However, I am not in any way attacking the player, as my response would be the same no matter who created this situation. So...rant time.

Recently in Scatterhome (Yup, that drama llama zone), a pillar of the community left. It was pretty out of the blue and left a lot of people confused, my character included. So, my character reached out and asked why. The response was fairly vague, but basically along the lines of "Being a citizen hampered my desired goals in life." This was a touch confusing because up to that point the character had been a pretty solid piece of Scatterhome foundation. Almost solely around for pvp, but there's nothing wrong with that at all.

It turns out, it was a bit vague because the player behind the character decided to give themselves a new reason to play. They wanted to chase the Bounty Rankings. I want to be clear here, I understand and find NOTHING wrong with this. It's a bit jarring IC but it's fine. As long as the roleplay supports it. So basically, the player left to gain access to bounties that they could see but not accept as long as they were a member of the faction, and thus hasten their current game goal. Cool.

The problem arose a few days later when it became apparent they wished to have their cake, and eat it as well. A discussion arose over faction comms (I was not around for this) concerning their return. Apparently, it had become known in some manner that they wished to return after a period of time, after they had "achieved their goals". This, of course, was met with some pretty obvious opposition. If you're actually roleplaying, why would you support someone returning when they left for the sole purpose of gaining the right to kill you?

The /I am assuming/ friends of the player still in the faction openly opposed this point of view. Their argument was, why would you block someone returning who had done so much for the community? They seem to simply ignore the obvious "Because they left for the sole purpose of gaining the ability to kill said community." Which, is mostly fine. Drama, character conversation, it's all good. Engaging even if stressful. Part of why most of us play. However, the entire thing was capped off by one of the people hiring said Bounty Hunter to kill someone on the other side of the conversation.

This left a real foul taste in the mouth of a lot of people because clearly this person had taken a real shallow excuse to give the bounty hunter a reason to kill someone. It was stupidly obvious and very poorly hidden. Additionally, the kill was committed at the faction station. This, as you would imagine, led to an enemy status. It was an extremely simple case of "Outsider killed member in our territory."

And yet.

Being the character who assigned the enemy status, I was approached as to "WHY" by the bounty hunter. I clearly explained the reason. You are not a citizen. You killed a citizen. In our territory. Being unhappy with the conversation, the player decided to issue me. And here is where I get seriously annoyed with what I perceive as metagaming interfering with RP. You can enemy someone for basically any reason you want. If your reason is stupid, you should face RP consequences. But it is never, ever, a reason to issue. Furthermore, being enemied for killing a faction member inside the faction's territory is arguably the single BEST reason to enemy. So what the actual fuck?

The weird little faction of (Again, I'm assuming they're his friends) friends supporting this Bounty Hunter, finally came up with a RP reason why it's okay for him to do what he's doing with zero consequences. "Death means nothing and has no real value." I want to be clear again here, that is a valid, if fairly stupid, roleplay stance to take. You can argue almost any stupid point if you want to. But at the same time, they are harassing the shit out of people who very clearly care about dying violently to other people. And for the sole purpose of trying to justify someone leaving the faction for single goal of killing members of the faction, whom then desires to return afterward. Or at least, it was suggested the wanted to which set the whole entire fire keg off.

So, to wrap it all up. I am extremely irritated that someone badly roleplayed an OOC goal change for their character to the point of others trying to step in and patch it up and make excuse for things that from an IC standpoint, there is no real excuse for. I understand changing a character up to keep it enticing. I believe expecting zero consequence to such action to be stupidly belittling to the faction communities who want to actually roleplay. I'm irritated that I got issued, and feel like it was for having a perfectly viable response to an IC event. And I am extremely irritated at looking at the entire situation and feeling like I have no ability to deal with it because the underlying factor is an entirely OOC choice, with next to zero IC RP to support it.

Should I be asking admin to RP as a NPC to make clear certain things matter? The whole 'death means nothing' argument is such a wildly stupid cop-out for people who want to avoid consequences and rp. If death means nothing, why does it have a financial cost? Both in the clone replication and any possible junk lost. If death means nothing, why do bounty hunters exist at all? If death means nothing, why would anyone pay for a bounty to be posted? I can have my character respond with any of these points and many more. I likely have to, but the point remains it won't matter much. Because the issue is more metagaming OOC bullshit than anything else.

Okay. Rant over. Feel free to roast/comment/discuss.

Bleh

That's right! All of you must have known immediately after seeing the title it was gonna be me asking for this. First, I wanna thank those who are gonna take the time to read this. Second, forgive my poor grammar as I'm not an expert by any means in such.

(Note: Had no clue where to place this thread)

TLDR: Bushraki have tons of lore, aren't better than other races, let's make it a playable race.

Bushraki can and should be a playable race and here's why.

When I first saw Starmourn in development the Bushraki really caught my eyes as the roleplay and deep background provided via lore was amazing. Later when the Beta first started I found out that Bushraki weren't playable and the reasoning stated was that they'd have racial advantages over the other races. No clue if this is true as it was stated by players OOC but I wanna clear some things up.

All the lore can be found here: https://wiki.starmourn.com/Bushraki

The Bushraki were considered powerful due to the wetwiring systems that they had which gave an immense advantage to those who did not have them. At one period of time, they possessed both wetwiring and mindsims when no one else did. This gave them the ability to store medicine in their bodies to heal themselves and the ability to process information better than any other race. After they betrayed the Ishvana though the technology of wetwiring and mindsims were spread across the Starmourn galaxy thus eliminating any advantages they previously had besides cybernetics. That means every spacer/player has that same advantage the Bushraki has.

Cybernetics - Bushraki artifacts do exist now and I know I'm assuming this but the reason you can wear them without your body rejecting such modifications is because your wetwiring system and any race can have them (Correct me if I'm wrong please) . You could say that bushraki would start off with cybernetics but they wouldn't be artifact tiered limbs and such. For one I presume almost all artifacts are Ishvana technology and enhancements so the bushraki artifacts are Ishvana technology. Meaning most regular Bushraki probably has regular old limb parts built with simple cybernetics.

H.E.T.E Cloning and Body - Some folks might ask well if you die don't you have to be cloned? I'm sure H.E.T.E could grow your body with a few missing limbs and attack tech onto it. I currently own bushraki legs and they attach them onto me no problem after I die. A few flavor lines here and there would suffice.

Roleplay - Some folks might see the Bushraki as raving lunatics that can't be trusted but the roleplay it can provide is immense. Previously, they had a culture that created or appreciated art, literature, music, and vigorous sports before they were invaded and brutally experimented on by a higher technological species. Aye, they kinda went coo coo for coco puffs for awhile but they had a good reason to be upset! After awhile they even turned their back against the Ishvana and helped fight them off. Currently, they reside in Oldtown, New Dakimazi, and pirate across space. Meaning you could roleplay as a Bushraki who wants to recover their previous culture, a hate filled warrior against the Ishvana/Sa'hak-ren, pirate, druggie, or whatever else you wanted to be.

The Bushraki have a very deep lore that has been explored very thoroughly and I believe that making them a playable race adds lots of roleplay opportunities. Though some people may view them with disdain, I believe that players should be given a chance to lead this race out of it's sad past and make history in Starmourn.

Thanks for reading everyone!

Hello, everyone, I have come up with something that I hope you will like and want to take part in.

I've come up with a story - fairly short, I think - for a campaign. Now, I've never GM’d before, or even participated in tabletop roleplay, so if anyone wants to take the reins and be the GM, or just work alongside me, feel free to PM me. The story is pretty simple, though, and focusing on RP rather than rules, so it will not be difficult. Basically I'm taking the RP forums idea and adding a simple plot to it. See rules below. The story is also adaptable, if the players go a different direction than expected.

The premise of this story is that there is a criminal to catch. The chase will include moving to a few different locations. The cast is as follows:

For 4-6 players

The leader, a W’hoorn detective, also in the military

A starship pilot

A hacker

Muscle

Optional:

*Medic

*Diplomat

*Mechanic

*Scientist (Biologist, Anthropologist…)

*your choice

- You can choose the gender, name, and (except for the W'hoorn) race of your character. And, of course, their personality and motivations will be fashioned by you.

- Your character CAN die - but will of course resurrect in a cloning facility. So they will be out of the story, but not forever dead, so no worries if you're using your most favorite character.

- The GM handles ALL events and NPCs. You control only your character’s actions (and any pets/personal NPCs that belong to your character). And as was stated in the other list of rules, you may only state that you try to hit someone in the head, you don't get to say if the blow connects or not.

- The actions are decided not by dice rolls, but by whatever makes sense or makes a good story.

- When you are taking a turn, sign off with your name, and the name of the person that you think should logically come next, like this: Joe > Bob or Joe > Captain Thel (NPC). If another player thinks that they urgently need to react to the situation, they may steal, signing as follows: Joe > (Bob) > Captain Thel, Bob being the person who stole. Play fair, and don't hog the limelight.

- Respond within 2 days or someone else will take over your character. Exceptions can be made if you PM the group a heads up that you will be away for a bit.

- You may also be booted at the group's discretion if you don't play nicely. For example - not following the storyline, going against the other players or the GM, or otherwise being dumb or a jerk.

Please comment below if you're interested in playing, and comment or PM if you want to help me behind the scenes.

********************

This is a story written by Traveler, Bandus, Theograth, Jerom, Malash, and Qitorien, possibly with cameos by other people. She was looking for information on a Ry’nari horde leader, who was suspected of being involved in a failed assassination attempt on the W’hoorn Navarach.

She frowned, shifting her wings slightly, as her eyes shifted rapidly back and forth, skimming line after line of text, and still she did not see what she was looking for. “Mavis!” she snapped, abruptly, leaning back in her chair and stretching her legs a little. It didn't help much.

“Yes, madam,” replied the polite and pleasant voice of Mavis, Sasha's mindsim. “What can I do for you?”

“Scan this document for instances of the word Hadar in near proximity to the phrase 'darkest night’,” ordered Sasha. She scratched the fur along the collar of her armoured vest. Sasha enjoyed being a soldier, for the most part, as well as her current detective mission. But she missed the freedom of her tunic and loin cloth, and the open plains of Mithma, where she had grown up. It had been so long since she’d had a long enough leave to go home and see the family and breathe in the sun kissed air.

Here on Celestine, the air was heavy, and musty, and everything felt so closed up. Of course, in the upper district of Cal-Antsa, it wasn't so bad. There, everything was the height of luxury. Sprawling mansions, with alabaster and lapis lazuli, surrounded by rich, verdant landscaping and sparkling fountains and pools….

But Sasha had work to do, and so she was in the business district, sitting at a kiosk in the second largest library on the whole planet.

“Madam, you have incoming communication from Captain Thel,” said Mavis in her ear.

“Receive,” said Sasha.

“Agent Okkar,” said a brisk voice. Okkar wasn't Sasha's real name, but she had thought it prudent to take some measures of precaution against possible detection in her work.

“Yes, Captain Thel,” replied Sasha.

“We have a lead on the Scoundrel who is suspected of planting the explosive device,” said Captain Thel.

“Hut Polder, alias Toby Mer?” asked Sasha.

“Alias Yor Longhaul,” added Captain Thel. “Yes, that one. I need you to apprehend him and bring him in for questioning. We have enough on him to warrant arrest.”

“Madam,” said Mavis in her ear, “I have found the phrase that you requested.”

Sasha frowned, drumming her fingers. She read the words on her screen that Mavis had highlighted, and her eyes widened and she barely suppressed a gasp.

“Agent Okkar?” said Captain Thel, sounding impatient.

“My apologies, Captain!” said Sasha. “But I have just found a very good lead on Hadar! It's nothing solid yet, but if I act quickly I may be able to uncover more.”

There was a brief silence. Then Captain Thel said thoughtfully, “Agent Silas has nothing pressing at the moment. Leads in Cal-Im’hala have come to a dead end.” Another pause. “I see that you have worked with him before. I will pass on the Hut Polder assignment to him and you may follow your lead.”

“Thank you, Captain,” said Sasha, unable to keep the note of relief out of her voice. It meant that she would be able to remain on Celestine for a little longer, and although she didn't care much for the planet, it was better than space travel.

Sasha > Captain Thel (npc)

One thing that always bugged me about my first real main character in Achaea is that I class-hopped like mad because I wanted to try everything out. It didn't really fit the RP as well in that world and while that didn't matter at the gamewide level, it always bugged me personally that I couldn't narrow it down and stick to one thing. (This was before multiclass. Multiclass would have saved me so much money early on...)

Here, I took my nanoseer and made him a scoundrel within a month of multiclass which sucked, but at least class-wise, it makes more sense. For a little bit there I felt like the one thing I wanted to do RP wise was stay the same class, but then I realized people make drastic career changes these days, so how much easier would that be in the far future?

And then once I actually started playing again and started using the augmentation options to change Xiru's appearance, it really hit how much fun the mechanical advantages are here. It really suits my RP style, which can be quite fickle even as I'm trying to tone it down.

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone else has things they really appreciate about the sci-fi genre that just wouldn't fly or wouldn't fit as well in high-fantasy muds?

Congrats!

You've made your character, fleshed out a cool backstory, and have a pretty good understanding of the EMOTE command. You're a roleplayer, and you're gonna do what you're meant to do - roleplay. And you know, of course, that the best RP is admin/storyteller RP. Nothing is cooler than interacting with an NPC and changing the world. So, with great enthusiasm, you go to the nearest interesting NPC, and you say "Hey."

And you wait. There's no answer. You say "Hey" again to the NPC. Again, no answer. What the hell, right? You have a cool character, why no interaction? You think to yourself "I guess I just have to wait for an event," but you see on the forums all this interaction between the STs and players, and all this hype about RP. You raise your fist to the stars and shout, "Why doesn't Storyteller-Senpai notice me?" The stars are as silent as the NPC before you.

This is an unofficial, unsolicited, step-by-step guide to getting admin attention and getting the RP you want. While following this guide does not guarantee you RP, it does improve your chances. You are, however, guaranteed to improve the quality of your roleplaying by following this guide, or at least the spirit of it.

Step One: Submit Your Backstory (and motivations)!,
You know that super cool and original backstory we discussed in the first sentence of this guide? Make sure you submit it to the storytellers! At the very least, your org's storyteller should know it. If you're going to be doing cross-factional RP, it doesn't hurt to drop a line to the storyteller for that org. Storytellers aren't strictly limited to interactions with their own orgs, they're just focused on that org. They are also not limited to strictly organizational events. Rather, the labor is divided such that each organizational storyteller focuses also on the personal RP of that org's members.

The organizational storytellers are as follows (accurate as of Sep. 9, 2019)
Head Storyteller: Eukelade
General Storyteller: Tallulah
Scatterhome Storyteller: Soren
Song Storyteller: Ferenzi
Celestine Storyteller: To be announced soon!
Factionless/Rogue Storyteller: Just send stuff to one or more of the above.

While the Storytellers don't respond to every message, They do read all of them. The storytellers are not mind readers. They also do not monitor your activity 24/7. The best way to discuss your backstory is to communicate it! Additionally, talk with the storytellers about what you want as a roleplayer, as well as what your character wants and why. The Storytellers are here to facilitate this, so don't leave out your super secret character flaw or evil plan. Talking about your character's motivations helps guide the RP.

On the topic of backstories: Sometimes less is more.
Giving the Storytellers something to play with in your backstory provides an opportunity for RP. If your character is a Space Ninja from Xeron Colony and your backstory is that you murdered everyone in Xeron Colony then shuttled out, there's nothing left to play with. But if you murdered the next ruler in line and jetted, now there's a whole colony of toys. Storytellers like toys.

As another example, right now I'm DMing a D&D 5E campaign. All of my players are new to D&D, and they are all teenagers. One of them wanted to be a tall halfling. Like, mutated tall, for a halfling. I agreed to allow this, with the understanding that I'd get to decide why his character is so tall. Now it's a major plot element. He doesn't know that, and doesn't know why his character is tall. But he gave me a toy. I like toys. Storytellers like toys.

Step Two: Know the kind of RP you want

Be specific, and communicate this to the Storytellers. Some RP can be specific and goal-oriented such as "I want to blow up Song City." Some can be general and more playful "I want to party on Agog with my fellow Krona." Neither of these are specific enough!

If you want to blow up Song City, a good place to start is logistics. How are you getting the explosives necessary, and how are you smuggling them into Song City? Who is supplying them? Where are you putting them? These are all things you and your character need to decide, and these can be broken into various RP sessions. For example, you might start by reaching out to an explosives expert, a legendary smuggler, or a criminal mastermind. All of these NPCs exist. They also exist as PCs. Not every plot needs to be resolved by an NPC.

As for partying on Agog, if you want to make it bigger and better, maybe start with entertainment! Food and drinks can (and should) be provided by players. But maybe you reach out to an Elgan Dance Troupe on Krell, or a PC singer. Song on the Verge was a great example of how this can be done.

The most important factor here is that you're doing most of the leg work. You're not going to the Storytellers and saying, "I wanna blow up Song City. Make it happen." You're saying "Okay, I wanna meet with an explosives expert." That's manageable and fun. The Storytellers are very busy cooking up global and faction events, as well as RPing with other players. You should be prepared to do most of the work.

It may also help to think of your RP as a TV series, rather than as a blockbuster film. Divide it into episodes. These are the individual sessions that make up a long-running story arc.

Step Three: Include Others!

One of the best ways to get noticed is to include as many other PCs as possible. Going to meet with an explosives expert? Bring some hired muscle, or a professional negotiator. Or just a friend to watch your back. Trying to find food for your party? Hire a crafter! The Storytellers' job is to tell stories to as many people as possible. Including more people makes the Storytellers' job easier, and improves the likelihood of your RP being picked up. It's also just good practice. RP is, by nature, collaborative. You don't have to announce to the whole mud "HEY, RP OVER HERE." Even secret/espionage RP needs collaborators.

On a additional note to this, include newbies whenever possible. It aids player retention and vastly increases the chances of your plot being picked up.

Step Four: Play to Play, not to Win

Roleplaying is a collaborative interaction. You are all telling a story together. Entering into the roleplay with a competitive mindset is sure to alienate others. Though your character may have goals, your goal should be to tell a story. There is no trophy for always achieving your character's goals always. Furthermore, there's no trophy for sending the most emotes, or being the star of the RP always. Letting other players shine is a great way to improve the quality of your RP. Fresh ideas make fresh RP.

To give you an example, recently my character was involved in an altercation with several other PCs, as well as a Storyteller-driven NPC. When the NPC began to pull a weapon from inside her coat, my character armed her magnotron to grab it. It ended up being an Ilrill rod, which happily flew to her magnotron. Irill is explosive. The resulting explosion should have killed my character (and I informed the storyteller I was ready to take a death, but we couldn't figure out a way to mechanically do it). Instead, I roleplayed my character being disabled for the encounter while her wetwiring healed her. Other players got to be star, and it was a great encounter. I could have very easily emoted dodging, or turning off the magnotron. But my character was focused on pulling the weapon, and not only would it have been cheesy to say "Oh no wait I turn it off I'm fine lol," it would have been bad RP. Your character isn't a god. Vulnerability makes for cool moments.

Step Five: Remember, Everyone is Human

The other players you're roleplaying with are human. The storytellers you're roleplaying with are human. Everyone involved wants to have fun. Everyone involved makes mistakes. Everyone involved gets tired, has real-life things come up, and is at a different experience level. Everyone involved has different ideas of what's fun. Here's a great example of what NOT to do:

Bob the NPC says, "And now, for my next trick, I'm going to pull a rabbit out of a hat!"
Soren reaches into his hat and pulls out a rabbit!"
You tell YourBuddy, "//LOL ADMIN SCREWED UP."

This is discouraging and unfun. Work together to tell a story. Brush over mistakes and move on. Likewise, make sure everyone involved with your roleplay has fun too. Talk to them. Talk to your fellow PCs after and ask, "Hey, did you enjoy that?" Talk to your storyteller and ask, "Did you have fun?" Checking in is a good way to make sure everyone walked away happy. This is how you win at roleplaying. With everyone having fun. If someone didn't have fun, work it out. Figure out what can be done better next time. Maybe your roleplaying companion felt they didn't have enough screen time. Make sure they get to have more next time. Maybe this particular genre of roleplaying just wasn't their jam. What else can you include them in?

I hope all this information helps. As I said, it's not a guarantee that it'll work. But it will improve your roleplay and improve your chances of getting Storyteller interaction.

Have fun out there,
- Flip
