Re: When you think of armor in Starmourn, what do you imagine?
I actually think the light armour is a bit hard to imagine and doesn't fit what I think of when I think 'Scoundrel' class. I often don't think of it and it bugs me a bit to think that its a bodysuit my character can't take off.
Re: Elgan wanted for RP but also..
Shady sleazebag characters.. c'mon and join me even if you're not Elgan. Lets create an ecology of grime - a slumlord empire! I know that this speaks to someone... somewhere..
Re: When you think of armor in Starmourn, what do you imagine?
The way I see it, light armor fits like a bodyglove:
Medium armor fits like form-fitting plate armor:
And heavy armor is essentially a BEAST suit.

Akaxi said:First, sorry for the thread resurrection!
I haven't been involved in any IRE MUDs since MKO shut down, but I was feeling nostalgic today and thought I'd skim the other IRE forums to see some of the old threads discussing MKO's final days. I stumbled across this thread in the forum search and because my character was mentioned I thought I'd respond to say it warms my heart to be remembered so fondly. So, thanks, @Kestrel!
And while I'm at it I'll say hello to any other MKO vets who remember Akaxi or my admin name, Ka-hooli. I hope everyone is enjoying Starmourn!
Good to see you around, Akaxi! Don't be a stranger now, we'd love to have you around! (This is your contemporary Prandur saying hi)

Re: Elgan wanted for RP but also..
Great suggestions - mirroring some thoughts I've been having too. Dynasty might be a longer term goal but I do want to create rp so definitely will think about how to run contractors into things. Thanks for the support. I'm really enjoying the rp I do in my head as much as the rp you see hehe!
Engineer healing/support turret barrel
During the recent Monthly Discussion (the subject of which was Classes), one of the topics was support and healing. Although we could wait a while for a new class to fill the healer/support role (assuming something like that does, in fact, materialize), I decided to think about what could be done in the meantime to get some healing/support into the game. It seems a lot of people are drawn to engineer for its support capabilities, so that's where I looked first.
I'll keep the idea brief. I propose that the engineer turret barrel REPAIRARM be reworked to become a healing/support turret barrel. The way this would work is pretty simple: TURRET FOCUS would allow the engineer to spend 3s of balance to get the turret to target an ally, and then the turret would proceed to do its thing on its own. Here's some more notes about it:
- A support barrel makes good use of several mods,
- subversion during combat may be a pvp consideration,
- fortify and pantilt may both be useful with a support barrel, and
- there's some potential for jerry rigging autotargeting without FOCUS by messing with the enemy list, so there may need to be some additional behaviors set for the barrel or turrets generally.
Healing health is the first thing that comes to mind for its effect. Perhaps it could be set to restore health or some particular subsystem.
If you've got an idea for how it may help an ally without healing, please fire away in the comments.

IC/OOC divide
I just wanted to make a quick thank you to the players and to the devs for their strong support for a persistent in-character atmosphere!
I've seen old news posts where people chastised eachother for going out of character with help files and other things, I've seen people pretty consistently sticking to IC boundries and being really immersive in their roleplay and it's been wonderful.
Thank you to the players who passively and proactively reinforce the atmosphere and also thanks to the devs because you have something really special here that has been lost in other IRE games. Please don't lose it to promotion bloat and forcing conflict over rp so that people spend more time shouting out game syntaxes at eachother than being their character

Elgan wanted for RP but also..
Hi folks,
I'm fairly new to the game but not new to roleplaying or IRE games. I've been around since 2002 and I've played across a vast array of roleplaying games and I like to think I'm a bit good at it.
What I'm looking for is people who want to contribute to a company that my character Vohl is creating.
The idea is that (I know, probably cheese) Vohl has for (undisclosed reasons) been forced to move to Scatterhome. He'll never reveal the exact details but he'll often tell stories of vague mishaps, the details usually different from person to person depending on his angle but the truth remains that SOMETHING has unseated him from his home planet and forced him to start over in Scatterhome.
He's now trying to hire an all-Elgan crew and form a legitimate company. This would really suit people who enjoy rp'ing as traders, con-artists, sleazers, but above all who're enamoured with the Elgan rp and who're willing to help me really make it shine according to what lore we have. Note: to work for Vohl you need to be Elgan.
The end-goal isn't necessarily to 'win' at Starmourn so if people are not very wise on trading or perhaps more interested in 'bashing' I won't mind. What I'm looking for primarily is good solid roleplay with people who can think outside of the game mechanics and create rp in the spaces between where the props might only exist in emotes and the mechanisms of the rp might also only exist in the shared consensual imagination of those involved. Think for example - something that can't physically be bought or sold or a service like 'matchmaker dating agency' where it's entirely based on RP. That's the kind of innovative thinkers I'm keen to meet and to add to my Elgan stable.
I'm ALSO looking for people who're interested in interacting with above - and I'm open to staging ideas but also improv - less interested in PVP or 'surprise' conflict - so if you want to create some fun drama, please by all means pitch an idea to me, but if you're looking for something that doesn't involve conflict, I'm happy to improv with you as well as stage ideas OOCly for fun storylines.
DISCLAIMER: I do know that conflict will find me regardless of the above gentleman's agreement and I don't plan on crying foul but please be aware that the above is intended to attract what I'm looking for and isn't an exhaustive list or rules of engagement.

Re: More challenging PvE options - suggestions thread.
Existing xenoslaying mobs? I haven't seen once since the very first two. They die too quickly, and people are too on the ball for me to get there. If I'm thirty rooms into a bashing zone, I usually don't get to the right station before it's already dead. If I'm on a ship? No chance. I'm not upset about it, but the system needs more work.
I'm inclined to think that areas that are not soloable should have some more fun stuff going on than just a zone of rooms with mobs. Once again, I'd like to propose "dungeon" style scenarios. Fly out somewhere remote on a distress call, dock, and see what kind of scenario unfolds.

More challenging PvE options - suggestions thread.
Firstly, I'd like to say that I 100% support something along the lines of Morgan's suggestions for xenoslaying, and this idea is in no way opposition to that.
As others have said many times, a way to distinguish Starmourn from other muds (IRE titles in particular) is challenging PvE, in particular groups. Some of the IRE titles have already put effort into this, but a lot more could be done.
If you're like me and have casually played MMOs, or even single player games like Mass Effect, the Dragon Age series, etc, you probably enjoy group PvE combat involving strategy, coordination and the camaraderie of a shared challenge (at least in a multiplayer game).
That has mostly been lacking in IRE titles. Aetolia has put some effort into it, and Achaea may have as well (unsure about Achaea as my highest level character there is only 80ish).
Ideally, I would like to see things like:
+ areas that are not solo-able
+ mobs that heal other mobs, so they should be killed first
+ mobs with CC abilities
+ mobs with DoT abilities
+ mobs with AoE attacks
+ mobs that can chase
+ mobs that can afflict
+ mobs that call for help (drawing surrounding mobs in)
+ mobs that spawn adds (spawning additional mobs)
+ mobs that hit subsys hard, health not so much
+ mobs that can take cover, attack cover, and deal ranged damage. Nothing complex here, just an experiment to see if cover in PvE is actually that tough to balance.
I'd prefer not to see all of the above at once though! The point is to make the order of attack important because of more than just "that one is aggressive, hit it first".
Some of that and more is already possible with the existing xenoslaying bosses, but why not areas composed of mobs with those abilities? Not with every one dropping the tokens though. Existing xenoslaying mobs need to be tougher, but mobs of the existing strength and a bit weaker would make fantastic group hunting targets if they are in large numbers.
I have a bunch of suggestions as to where these areas could appear, but I will put those into replies. The ideas above are core to the group PvE idea itself though.
