Re: Grinding to max level
Montem's made a kickass system that does just that, @Jericho. Check it out:

Re: Grinding to max level
Taking a step back here, I just want to point out that if you asked anyone who doesn't play text-based MUDs whether it was more difficult/impressive/reward-worthy/whatever-you-want-to-call-it to A] hit some buttons a bunch of times over and over, or B] script an entire system to accomplish that end goal more efficiently, they would say B without hesitation.
And then they'd also say, "Wait, there's scripting and no graphics? What the f--- kind of game are you playing?" and you'd awkwardly laugh and say, "nevermind it's just a joke," and quickly change the subject.

Re: Grinding to max level
What always surprises me is how the general consensus seems to be because levels matter and bashing is (typically) considered tedious, it is okay for players to automate it because they don't want to deal with the "grind". If we allow coding and scripts to marginalize a large portion of the game, why not just get rid of levels and have all characters start at max level? That was sarcasm, but that's more or less how I view the use of automated systems, regardless of the debate on just HOW automated counts as automated.
The grinding is a part of the game that keeps players engaged. If levels weren't a thing, that would be one less thing to keep players around and active. I'm not saying it's the only thing to do, but it's a big one. Automation serves the same purpose as removing level based bashing, it allows a player to not focus on the game while accomplishing a goal - thereby that player is not actually engaged in the game.

Re: Grinding to max level
I dislike the grinding as well, but it’s a necessary thing. I don’t want to have to walk into every room, target the thing, attack 12 times, target next thing on a loop. When I’m killing 100-200 things in a setting, all of the above becomes nothing more than wasted time. So yeah, it’s cool if you don’t like it, but it’s just easier to do something I’m not a big fan of if it’s less of a hassle.

Re: Grinding to max level
Thems the breaks... the game has an inherent grind to it. Only very sick individuals enjoy the grind. I don't think that things like this are good for the health of the game because it eliminates the human stamina aspect of gaming. I can only grind for so long before I want to spoon my eyes out. This and other systems like this give an advantage to those using them. While I can pit up with button pressing for an hour or so at a time, you can generate marks with little to no actual effort.Perfect said:It's not enjoyable. Your system sounds like cryptocurrency mining.
I hate the one button room clearing systems. They can still walk away for the most part. All they have to do is set up in a non-aggro area and it pings you to come back. You don't have to pay attention whatsoever.
Maybe I am in the tiny minority of purists here and I'm sure all the coders will jump me for it but I am far from giving shits. It would be impossible to regulate out of the game, I realize. I can still think it is bullshit.

Re: Grinding to max level
I don't like grinding in other IRE games because you repeat one attack (except for Achaea where you use battlerage occasionally). That's why I love Starmourn grind (and Nanoseer especially) - I'm using 4+ different attacks each mob. If I was gonna automate that I'd just go play a Diku MUD where I mindlessly type kill <thing> because at that point it's functionally identical.

There's a such thing as enjoying different things. I enjoy coding. I enjoy seeing those efforts pay off, in the form of the things I make working as they're intended to.
I'm passed the point of 'enjoying' bashing, after having gotten to max level probably ~20 times now across 4 different IRE games. If I had to sit there spamming F1 still like I was playing in 2005 then I probably would've just quit before even getting level 20. You'd be surprised just how many are in the same boat. Sorry but text games aren't interesting enough to warrant that kind of mindless grinding, compared to something like Black Desert grinding.

Re: Grinding to max level
I hit 75 last night, what I did was make a basher that allowed me to do the moving then hit f1 and let it repeat my attacks until it killed everything. Then I move to another room, hit the button and on and on. Lets you watch movies or binge TV shows while you bash, and also keeps things within the automation rules. I highly recommend setting something up like it. You can even put in pings that will tell you when something dies, or when your health drops to a certain percent. Whatever you need to do to grab your attention when it is needed.
